I’m excited to have Ashley from At Home with Ashley guest post on the blog today! Below she shares her tips on making an adorable planter. If you like her stuff (I know I do!) she is releasing an ebook this Friday, July 15th, that focuses on how to decorate your home on a budget. All the information is located at the bottom of this blog post. Check it out and enjoy!
Hello! Thank you to Libby for letting me guest post! Libby and I went to college together and are old friends. It is so fun to connect with our blogs! I am an Interior Designer and just a girl who likes to have a pretty home with not spending my whole paycheck on decor. Well, let’s be honest, I would love to spend all of my money on accessories, but my husband wouldn’t be too happy- haha!
Earlier this spring, I was redoing my deck and I was searching for a great looking, modern, and affordable planter. I couldn’t find anything! I asked my friends on Instagram (I am @athomewithashley there if you want to meet up) and they didn’t have any great ideas.
Then I remembered a trick I had- just paint simple terra cotta vases! I did this over 7 years and here is how they are looking now:
Some have weathered a bit, but I don’t mind the character.
So I headed to Michael’s and bought a $1.29 terra cotta vase.
Notice that these vases come in a large variety of sizes with the largest size being $7.29.
Next to it I noticed paint specifically made for outdoors. I didn’t love any the colors so I grabbed a Martha Stewart paint (Beach Glass) for $2.29.
I also picked up a Craft Smart metallic paint in Bright Gold. The total was around $7. Always remember to check for coupons at craft stores. I keep the app on my phone and it sure pays off! That day I got 40% off my whole purchase and the total was less than $5! If you already have the paint on hand, this project will be much cheaper.
I went home and laid out my materials- the planter, 2 colors of paint, and a paint brush. I decided to paint the base the Beach Glass and the rim in the metallic gold. It took about 3 coats of each color of paint. It was pretty quick to paint and it turned out very cute!
I had a plant on hand from Trader Joe’s. I know finding inexpensive plants and flowers can be hard, but here are my best tips for finding them:
Isn’t it looking cute?
I did the same process by painting a second vase white and adding gold polka dots. Together they are the perfect accents for my desk!
So I have to be honest and tell you I didn’t always have all of the answers to having a beautiful space. I’ve been on a tight budget and for a few years I let that stand in my way. I figured that if I couldn’t do everything my heart desired, I would do nothing. So my house was boring and sad. Slowly I figured out some tricks (like above) to decorate on a budget and I brought my home back to life. Now it is a place where I love to spend time and create memories with my family. My home makes me smile when I wake up in the morning and is inspiring to be in. I know there are so many people like I was. Right?! Who out there has a space that is a little scary? Or maybe you don’t know where to start? Or maybe you are like me and don’t think you have enough money. Let me help you! I figured out steps and systems to create a look you love with the budget you have in my ebook At Home for Less. It launches July 15th and is $7.99 the first week and then goes up to $9.99. It will never be cheaper than the $7.99 price so if you are interested, I’d suggest checking it out soon. You can click here to purchasehttp://athomewithashley.com/my-ebook/ or there’s even a link to a free chapter so that you can get a taste of my teaching style and step by step instructions.
